Carnton Plantation - An antebellum home built by Randal McGavock in 1826. The house and grounds upon which it was built played an important part in the Battle of Franklin. Serving as a makeshift hospital for the dead & wounded soldiers. The beds, the rooms & even exterior buildings soon filled up with wounded or dead bodies from both sides of the war. There are blood stains throughout the house, even today, reminding all who enter of the many lives altered & lost in that battle.
Alas, the spirits of confederate soldiers have been seen here, even the sound of phantom horses thundering over the open grounds have been reported. It is said that the previous owner & nurse mate to the wounded, Carrie McGavock, still watches carefully over the grounds & the thousands of graves that were dedicated to the soldiers. Her spirit can be seen on the porch, or wandering through the cemetery.
It seems Carrie had her share of pain and sadness when living so it stands to reason that her spirit would be troubled, even before the battle and bloodshed that enveloped her home. Three children born to the McGavock’s died at an early age after prolonged illnesses. Some visitors have claimed to have been touched or shoved in the legs by small hands in an upstairs bedroom. Some have heard the sounds of children at play.
A beautiful home and museum, you can enjoy the historic tour during the day, but for ghost lovers, they also offer an affordable ghost tour.
During our visit we did not experience anything out of the ordinary. We took the historic tour and enjoyed it. But as always in these museums we couldn’t take pictures or video once inside. So the only hopes we had of capturing anything to share with our audience were confined to the exterior of the home and land. It appears as of this writing that nothing paranormal resulted during our visit.
We have reviewed the pictures, the video and have listened to some of the digital voice recordings, but thus far, we failed to declare that this site is haunted.
